Fastest woman in the world

Ethiopian track and field athlete Letesen Gidey, 23, is currently the fastest woman on the planet in both the half-marathon and the 5,000m and 10,000m, two distances for which she previously set world records.

On October 24, at the Valencia Trinidad Alfonso Semi-marathon, Ethiopian female runner Letesenbet Gidey broke the world record for this distance when she finished with a time of 1 hour 2 minutes 52 seconds, 1 minute faster than with the record that female athlete Ruth Chepngetich (Kenya) set in April this year (1 hour 4 minutes 2 seconds).

This is the first time Gidey has competed in the half-marathon (long distance running 21.0975 km, half the marathon distance). The first 10 km, Gidey took only 29 minutes and 45 seconds and even accelerated quite lightly in the last part of the race.

Thus, Gidey, 23, is currently the fastest woman on the planet in both half marathon distances of 5,000m and 10,000m, two distances for which she has set previous world records. Valencia is also the place where Gidey set a women's world record of 5,000m in October 2020.

At the recent Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Gidey won the bronze medal in the women's 10,000m.
